Ethical Principles and Good Practices

ModaPalavra, as an e-journal, plays a crucial role in widely and freely disseminating scientific research related to the field of Fashion in conjunction with various areas of knowledge. It is committed to adhering to ethical principles that respect academic and intellectual culture. To this end, it is guided by the best practice guidelines set forth by the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC Brasil) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). These principles must be observed by all parties involved in the publication process: editors, authors, and reviewers.

Duties of the Editor

Evaluate submitted manuscripts without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, regional affiliation, political or ideological stance, or theoretical perspectives of the authors, and without being influenced by personal, commercial, or revenue-related advantages.

Ensure reliability by maintaining confidentiality regarding all information about submitted manuscripts, except in relation to reviewers and the editorial team.

Make the final decision on which manuscripts will be published in the journal, considering the results of blind peer reviews, but without being obliged to adhere strictly to them.

Refrain from using information contained in submitted manuscripts for their own research without the express written consent of the authors. The editor should also decline to evaluate manuscripts that present conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other reasons arising from their relationship with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to the manuscripts.

Be open and receptive to complaints regarding ethical issues or incorrect content in submitted or published manuscripts, and take necessary and appropriate actions in response to these complaints, in accordance with the recommendations of ABEC and/or COPE.

Duties of the Reviewer

Familiarize themselves with the journal’s profile, author guidelines, and publication standards.

Assist the editorial team in making editorial decisions regarding the publication of submitted manuscripts through blind review and by recommending improvements to authors.

Immediately notify the editorial team about their availability or inability to conduct reviews for which they have been invited, any inability to meet established deadlines, the existence of conflicts of interest related to the manuscript, and their lack of qualification to assess the manuscript.

Prioritize objectivity and clarity in the review process, providing consistent arguments in their recommendations or critiques, considering the theoretical and methodological delimitations outlined in the manuscript.

Evaluate submitted manuscripts without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, regional affiliation, political or ideological stance, or theoretical perspectives of the authors, and without being influenced by personal, commercial, or revenue-related advantages.

Treat manuscripts as confidential documents. Do not show, discuss, or comment on the manuscripts under review with third parties—neither in person nor through postings on websites, social media, or other digital communication platforms (even if not identified).

Do not use privileged information or ideas obtained through reading and evaluating manuscripts for personal gain.

Decline to review manuscripts that present conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other reasons arising from their relationship with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to the manuscripts.

Reviewers will receive a certificate confirming their evaluations and will have their names published in a list in the final issue of the year.

Duties of the Author

Ensure the submission of original manuscripts with consistent scientific content, without similar content to other works published in scientific journals, conference proceedings, theses, or other forms of scientific production and dissemination. In the case of a significantly modified and updated version, the editorial team must be informed, and if approved, it will undergo a similarity check, as is standard for all manuscript approvals, and may be rejected if the similarity percentage is deemed compromising to its originality.

Commit to avoiding redundancy, multiplicity, or simultaneous publication, thereby preventing the submission of the same manuscript to another journal at the same time, even without a guarantee of publication.

Certify that there are no fraudulent, distorted, or intentionally inaccurate statements. Any form of plagiarism constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial behavior.

Observe a 12-month interval between the publication of one work and the submission of another manuscript for all authors of the manuscript.

Always use recognized sources in creating the manuscript. All private information (images, documents, and/or any other information) must be used only with explicit written permission from the source(s) or copyright holders (when applicable). Information obtained through confidential services, such as arbitration, manuscripts, or grant requests, should not be used without explicit written permission from the author involved in these services.

Ensure that ideas, concepts, and statements from other sources and authors mentioned or discussed in the manuscript are clearly presented as direct or indirect quotes and properly referenced according to the journal’s guidelines, so that failures of this nature are not categorized as plagiarism.

Provide, at the time of submission, the data and metadata of all authors, including a link to their Lattes curriculum and ORCID identifier.

Adhere to the maximum number of authors and minimum qualification requirements for submissions: up to four authors, with a minimum qualification of a Master's degree, co-authored by at least one Doctor. The manuscript should have a primary author (first), who acts as the corresponding author, with the order defined by the authors at the time of submission. Consent and awareness terms for publication must be signed by all authors with their Lattes and ORCID information.

Read, accept, and comply with the Conditions for submission and Author Guidelines easily found on the journal’s website and during the submission process.

Submit the authorization from the Ethics Committee of the institution to which the manuscript author is affiliated or the research is linked (when applicable) at the time of submission.

Promptly inform the editorial team if a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work is discovered, cooperating in correcting the article.

Disclose, after the final approval of the manuscript, all sources of financial support for the research or project reported in the manuscript, including graduate scholarships from funding agencies.

Authors have the right to defend themselves in cases of accusations of plagiarism, unethical behavior, or violation of good practices, as well as to receive consistent evaluations of the submitted manuscript, written objectively and politely, contributing effectively to research and the researcher’s development—provided that the journal’s norms and guidelines are met and the manuscripts proceed to evaluation.
