O presente artigo apresenta pesquisa bibliográfica, dentro do campo de estudo de gêneros musicais, acerca do desenvolvimento do que convencionou-se chamar de som “pesado” (heaviness) ao longo de aproximadamente sete décadas da história do rock. Embora em sua origem essa característica da estética sonora ainda não fosse determinante, o artigo mostra como ela foi se evidenciando progressivamente com o passar do tempo, tornando-se uma preocupação constante de muitos músicos e até mesmo uma característica definidora de diversos subgêneros do rock.
