Introduced in 1911 in Santa Catarina, the reform promised to innovate with regard to the method of teaching, management, knowledge and school practices. Under the assumptions of modern pedagogy it intended to introduce a form of streamlined and standardized school, of simultaneous, free and secular teaching, able to contribute to the formation of the republican citizen. Emphasis is placed, in addition to documentary sources relating to school groups in Santa Catarina from 1911 to 1935, also on laws, decrees, regulations, newspapers, education programs, school notebooks, textbooks and teaching materials, etc., and testimony from former teachers and alumni. Reform Orestes Guimarães created conditions for the consolidation of an education system and the construction of a system of thought identified with certain interests of Brazilian society in the republican period.
Keywords: School Culture.
