Resumo

Neste trabalho, tem-se por objetivo fazer algumas reflexões sobre o papel do Estado na educação romana. Nas pegadas desse processo, discute-se o conceito de educação, o seu desenvolvimento na esfera familiar e a posterior participação da “iniciativa privada”. Mesmo marcando os seus limites, o Estado romano esteve presente nos seus quadros formativos, quer para controlá-los, quer para adaptá-los às suas necessidades práticas e imediatas, como a formação de “funcionários” para a “máquina” administrativa. Quando o Estado romano assumiu a educação como um encargo público, esta se configurou muito mais como uma estratégia propagandística do que uma política pública.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to make some reflections about the part of the State in the Roman Education. In the footprints of this process, it was discussed the concept of Education, its development in the familiar sphere and the posterior participation of “private initiative”. Although marking its limits, the Roman State was present in its formative boards, to control them and to adapt them to its practical and immediate necessities, like the formations of employees to the administrative machine. When the Roman State take over Education as a public responsibility, it was configured more like an advertising strategy than a public policy.
